more on gee's bend
Gee's Bend quilts have interested and influenced me since I first saw them displayed at the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2003. I enjoyed this review of the second exhibit of the quilts by art blogger Deborah McCleod. She explores the attention that art critics, so often taken up with the new and trendy, are paying to this work.

Though I've written about them several times (and also read much that others have written) the quilts remain for me a sort of visual Zen koan--their deepest meaning seems to remain just outside my grasp of rational understanding. On an intuitive level, though, their impact is powerfully felt. ¶ 6:33 AM

I too love the Gee's Bend quilts. I first saw the PBS documentary three years ago and have watched it several times since. I was so inspired by the woman who made a quilt out of her husbands clothing, after he died, so that she could wrap herself up in memories of him. Beautiful! The abstracted design are just stunning. I'll read your essay in the next couple of days. Look forward to it. :)
The work clothing quilts are beautiful, very subtle compared to the more colorful ones. All of the quilts seem to have a certain presence that comes from their use and personal meaning, as well as being visually powerful.
