you just never know

Here are installation views of two paintings of mine that were recently purchased for the law firm of Williams, Venker and Sanders, in St. Louis MO. These two paintings were done in 1999, and a third one (not pictured here but part of the same group purchased) was from the mid-80's.
There's a point when I tend to give up on selling work that old. But these paintings had been at Steven Boody Fine Arts, my gallery in St. Louis, all this time, just waiting for the right situation I guess. They were sold at current prices. So that was a very nice thing to have happen. ¶ 8:15 PM

Impressive work no matter the date. Each piece has an unexpected twist that sparks the painting(s)... funny how it's the subtle elements that make the difference.
Thanks much. It's nice to get positive reactions to older work, whether via sales or comments. I've always had a tendency to dismiss my older work. But I have to say, I'm changing my perspective on this...maybe it's just getting older and feeling more kindly towards my younger self. But it is helped by things like this gallery sale--and also by the good response I've had to studio and online sales of older work. And then there is the painting from grad school currently hanging at a local show (see blog from early June) which garnered some nice comments.
In any case, I do think there are important and good paintings in every phase that an artist goes through, at least once they have reached a certain level of competency. And most of us have quite a few of those pieces on hand! Especially since early on, exposure through shows and galleries doesn't happen so much.

Absolutely.....very good work here, Rebecca. And I agree with Karen about good and not so good work in every phase we go through in our evolution as an artist.
Just recently I've had a lot of older work chosen for galleries, etc. (hoping also for sales)..And I am so happy to have them back out in circulation. I think they are good but a little different than what I'm doing right now. I just couldn't paint over some of them and they kept mounting up. I know all artists have this problem.
Maybe we should all have the funds to rent a controlled environment storage unit. Ha ha!

These are beautiful! I particularly like the top one.
I know what you mean about dusting off the old work. I do the same thing... think that older work will never move along. I sold a small painting yesterday that I had relegated to a guest room/office in my house, but brought out to add to the mix that some collectors were viewing. It sold!
Congrats on your recent sales, especially at current prices.
