detail of recent painting
An ongoing frustration with photos of my work is that so much surface texture and detail is lost when shooting a large painting. I try to remember to take a few details shots when I'm photographing, and here are two from my most recently posted painting, Spring. ¶ 12:58 PM

Very inspiring to see the details of your work. It teaches me to use more different tools to create texture and detail. I tend to be too 'painterly', meaning that I invariably only use brushes and knives, and forgetting that there are so many more tools one could use.

Thanks to both...to Arco, I really enjoy using a lot of different tools, learning what each can do, and experimenting with all kinds of things to make marks. If you start doing this, going to the hardware store or a second-hand shop will never be the same for you--you'll see possibilities in everything. For myself, I do try to avoid marks or effects that look too obvious or gimmicky. (As in, "oh look, she must have used a comb to do that.") I like things subtle and a bit mysterious...
