  david crowell jazz

My nephew, jazz composer and sax player David Crowell--along with his ensemble-- have released their first CD, Spectrum, on the Innova label, which describes it thus:

New York City-based saxophonist and composer David Crowell fuses strictly notated composition with jazz and ambient improvisation. A love for the music of composers Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Zorn merges with his roots in jazz and improvised music to create a focused and original sound. Satisfying for its diversity but coherent in its message, Spectrum travels a vivid emotional landscape.

I have been playing it over and over in my studio, and find something fresh with every listening.

I was really pleased when David asked if he could use my paintings as cover and insert art for the CD. It is a great fit, and an honor for me to have a part in this. It's actually the second time that David and I have collaborated--his music is featured on the YouTube video of me painting and discussing my work.

Below are two other views of the album--showing the back cover and one of the insert pages. David's mother, my sister in law, Dee Hunt, did the design--

Comments:
very groovy...listened to it on your mentioned video, love to work to a variety of music sans vocal when I work, jazz works it's way in there, will have to pick this up as much for the tunes as for the cover (only way at the moment I could afford it!! hehehe)

great, it really is good and I'm not just saying that because he is my nephew...oh and you're right, you can get 5 paintings for the price of a CD!

oh, one other thing--a version of the piece that is on my video is also on the CD--

Gorgeous layout and design, and your work fits so beautifully into it. With such a striking cover and design, the music has got to be good!

Outstanding! Thanks for the music lead... I'm very motivated and inspired by music as I work in my studio. I also love that David has a connection with Philip Glass (one of my favorites to listen to while in my studio).

And, I'll agree that it's a great deal to also get some of your artwork with the CD - I can't wait.

Thanks--I'm so pleased to be able to do a little bit of promo for my nephew...and i think he is going to go far in the music world.

This is a perfect fit. The CD looks great!
